Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol

INCI Name: Bakuchiol

Purposes: Antioxidant , Preservative , Anti-inflammatory

We use Bakuchiol as a plant-derived, clinically confirmed, natural alternative to retinol. It comes from the seeds and leaves of the Babchi tree. The components of this tree have historically been used in Indian and Chinese medicine. Bakuchiol was first isolated in 1973 and has been shown to offer anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-bacterial and hepatoprotective properties.

Even though Bakuchiol has been shown to offer similar benefits as Retinol, its chemical structure is not indicative of the vitamin A-like "retinoids." It can influence the way cells behave metabolically, stimulating the production of proteins such as collagen.

Bakuchiol and retinoids up regulate collagen I, III and IV production and downregulate MMP, an enzyme that deteriorates collagen in the skin. A 12-week clinical study indicated people experienced an improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, elasticity and sun damage.

A double-blind study in 2018 that compared 0.5% Bakuchiol with 0.5% retinol cream concluded that Bakuchiol performs similarly to retinol, and is better tolerated by the skin.

For consumers that don't wish to abandon retinol for Bakuchiol, it has been shown that the two can work together in formulations to stabilize retinol and provide tangible benefits to the skin.
