This extract, commonly known as green tea extract, comes from the leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis, Theaceae. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is used in moisturizers, anti-aging creams, sunscreens and shampoos/conditioners. In 2015, a review article noted that over 6000 research papers have been published.

The important parts of the extract are polyphenols. It's important to know the polyphenol content of the extract being used, because there can be differences in quality among different extracts. 

Some of the benefits of this extract include it being an antioxidant, UV protectant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial. The polyphenols in green tea are antioxidants, which protect the skin from free-radicals, which destroy collagen in the skin. Green tea has been shown to reduce damage caused by the sun. Thus it would be a good idea to put it on under sunscreen.
