Cetyl alcohol is a white, waxy solid that is one of the two major components of cetearyl alcohol, a common binding, bulking emulsifier used in personal care products. It is a fatty alcohol, the kind that is not drying. Emulsifiers keep oil and water together by acting as a connecting agent between small units of water and oil. These ingredients can also be used to impart thickeness to formulations, and provide emolliency.
