Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) belongs to a class of ingredients called amidopropyl betaines. These consist of various fatty acids bonded to amidoproyl betaine. CAPB is this with fatty acids derived from coconut. This ingredient is used primarily as a surfactant in formulations. Surfactants are surface active agents, and they help to clean skin and hair by mixing with oil and dirt so they are later rinsed away. This means they act like detergents, or soap, but are not soap. CAPB is also used in household cleansing products, such as dish soap.
