Purposes: Humectant

This ingredient is obtained by filtering the fermentation broth products of the fungus Galactomyces. This ingredient is well regarded for its water-like properties. Pitera, which is the traditional name for this filtrate, was discovered as an anti-aging, skin-nourishing liquid. It is rich in vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and organic acids.

Procter & Gamble conducted an in-vitro study that suggested Pitera-containing moisturizers assist in protecting the skin. Specifically noting that Pitera has antioxidant properties and can increase hyaluronan production in epidermal cells. The more hyaluronic acid in the skin, the more hydrated and plump skin results.

In 2014, another study was done that revealed Pitera might be able to reduce skin pigmentation. In 2015, an additional study indicated that filtrate can activate aryl hydrocarbon receptors (AhR). This is important for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.
