Glycerin

INCI Name: Glycerin

Purposes: Humectant , Denaturant , Solvent

Glycerin is a thick, colorless liquid with a sweet taste. It is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water. It's used in personal care due to its moisturizing properties. It can improve the smoothness and moisturization of the skin. Glycerin has been used in cosmetics for over fifty years, and it is a natural ingredient present already in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin.

In 2005 a study was conducted that indicated glycerin levels correlate with skin hydration. Even newer studies have shown glycerin to be an osmoregulator, to maintain the liquid crystal balance of lipids in the skin, and protect from irritation.
