Silicates are all similar by having silicon, oxygen, and one or more metals in their structure. All silicates are hygroscopic - they absorb moisture effectively. They are used as opacifiers, slip-modifiers, thickening agents, bulking agents, and binding agents.
Kaolin is a type of clay called a hydrous aluminum silicate. It is effective at absorbing excess sebum and oil from the skin.
