Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is a naturally occurring compound that belongs to a class of acids called Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). Various salts of lactic acid are used in personal care products, but they are generally used to promote exfoliation. Lactic acid is a larger molecule than glycolic acid, so it penetrates the skin less effectively. This makes it more gentle, but a little less effective.
A study from 1996 compared a 5% and a 12% lactic acid treatment of the skin. The higher concentration allowed for more deep exfoliation into the dermis layer of the skin. Aside from exfoliation, it also had moisturizing properties.
