Tea Tree leaf oil is obtained via distillation of Tea Tree leaves. It is one of the most well-known essential oils that has been used for nearly a century for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Tea Tree oil is a complex mixture of chemical compounds, containing about a hundred individual components. The major ones include terpinen-4-ol, gamma-terpinene, and alpha-terpinene.
It is well-regarded for its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-acne properties. Studies indicate that treatment of 5% tea tree oil is as effective against P. acnes as 5% benzoyl peroxide, which is a workhorse ingredient for anti-acne formulations.
For those with sensitive skin, exercising caution with Tea Tree oil is a must. Using undiluted oil is not recommended.
