Niacinamide

Niacinamide

INCI Name: Niacinamide

Purposes: Smoothing

Niacinamide, a derivative of niacin (vitamin B3), enhances the appearance of hair by providing body and sheen. It can also improve the texture of hair that has been damaged by chemical treatments.

When used in skin-care products, these forms of vitamin B3 can reduce flakiness and support normal metabolism. It has anti-aging properties by promoting collagen, keratin, filaggrin, and involucrin production. It has also been shown to reduce hyperpigmentation when used at 2 to 5% daily. When used in addition to acetyl glucosamine, a precursor to hyaluronan, the benefits are multiplied.

The skin's extracellular matrix - the fluid between our cells - consists primarily of free fatty acids, cholesterol, and ceramides. Niacinamide has been shown to increase the synthesis of these, resulting in healthier and stronger skin, decreased water loss, and better hydration.

Although niacinamide is not the main treatment for acne, it does possess sebum regulating and anti-inflammatory properties. One study indicated a 4% daily niacinamide treatment over two months improved 82% of subjects' skin texture and complexion.
