Sodium Citrate

Sodium Citrate

INCI Name: Sodium Citrate

Purposes: Buffering , Chelating Agent , Masking ,

Sodium citrate, the sodium salt of citric acid, is used as a buffering agent (chelating agent) in cosmetic and personal care products - it helps control the pH level. However, it can also be used for its masking and preservation properties. It is commonly found in citrus fruits such as limes, oranges, and lemons. It is used to lower the pH of formulations but is also an AHA (alpha-hydroxyacid). Another example of an AHA is glycolic acid. There has been some research that shows using citric acid regularly can help sun-damaged skin, increase its thickness and promote the formation of glycosaminoglycans, which are hydrating compounds in the skin.
